There is some warfare and street violence in this novel, including very brief mentions of harm to animals. There are also some depictions of possible hallucinations, mind control, drug use, institutionalization and mental illness, trauma and murder. There is not much depiction of homophobia toward the queer characters in the book, but while attitudes in 13th century Italian city states were different from today's, the general attitudes shown are not queernormative.
